Guaranteeing safe migration remains one of our main objectives in domestic affairs, declared Interior minister Bledi Cuci during his remarks on Thursday’s plenary session while discussing a deal with the UK on repatriating and integrating Albanian nationals.
Cuci said that the two countries should enhance cooperation when it comes to illegal migration in order to prevent criminals from getting their hands on that, with the most obvious being human trafficking.
“Guaranteeing safe and standard migrant, through and from Albania – a phenomenon that has direct implications in the country’s national security and that of our neighbors – remains one of our main priorities”, the interior minister said.
Among others, he urged lawmakers to ratify the agreement.
“Albania and Britain will step up the battle against migration where the two countries will carry an operation against migration. The agreement is in compliance with domestic and international legislations”, he added.
The agreement was proposed by the British government after Brexit. Minister Cuci said that the two parties have found a common language on integrating Albanian expats living in the UK.
“Illegal migration cannot be addressed without improving the conditions of legal emigration first. I asked UK’s foreign secretary to revise the regime on how Albanian citizens working and living are being treated there in order to facilitate new employment opportunities as well as seasonal travel”, Cuci said.
The interior minister also noted that the agreement brought to parliament also includes a collaboration with Britain on the repatriation of Albanian nationals, from transportation costs to the protection of personal data, as well as the return of illegal migrants.
