The Albanian Assembly convened at 6 PM as parliamentarians cast their vote for the new president.

Socialist candidate Bajram Begaj will be voted by secret ballot.

71 votes are necessary for Begaj’s appointment by the parliament.

MPs of the ruling majority and 26 from the opposition are attending the plenary session.

Begaj is also following the session from one of the parliament’s lodges.

Shortly after the session convened, former PM Sali Berisha wanted to take the podium to contest the procedures followed, but his request was refused by parliament speaker, Lindita Nikolla.

This led to Berisha leaving the parliament, followed by several members of the opposition.

Berisha spoke to reporters gathered outside the Assembly and denounced the session as a ‘flagrant violation of the Constitution’.

“Article 167 of the Constitution prohibits active military officials from running for office, or their election in other posts, other than military-related ones”, Berisha said.

“His resignation is completely worthless”, he added.

Also, Berisha claimed that the decree signed by President Meta is not valid as it was signed outside of the country’s borders.
