Mystery of Sonila’s murder in Italy, Italian media: 16 people under investigation

A 21-year-old Albanian woman was found dead in March 2021 in an apartment on the outskirts of Turin. Death is still shrouded in mystery.

The story of the girl, Sonila, exploited by an also Albanian group that ran a prostitution ring in the Piedmontese capital, emerged after Operation Mariposa, which last week led to five precautionary measures for crimes ranging from robbery to aiding and abetting of illegal immigration.

INVESTIGATIONS

Sixteen people are under investigation. According to the Turin prosecutor’s office, as reported by La Stampa newspaper, the girl may have been pushed to commit suicide. The investigations are coordinated by the prosecutor Valentina Sellaroli.

The operation that led to the dismantling of the network began in May 2022 from a robbery against an Albanian prostitute. Investigations revealed a criminal system involving young women forced into prostitution in specific areas of the city such as Barriera Nizza and Madonna di Campagna.

Exploited girls

The victims, all of Albanian nationality, according to what has been reconstructed, suffered constant physical and psychological harassment. Women were forced to hand over all their income to their exploiters and were in conditions of total subjugation, maintained even through manipulative sentimental ties. Among them would be Sonila, found dead in the bathroom of a small apartment where she lived with her partner (now among those under investigation) and her two-year-old child.
