Every personality with a contribution to the Socialist Party, that is not a member of the parliamentary group or politically active, is a potential candidate for president.

These were the words used by Socialist MP Damian Gjiknuri, who is also part of the ruling majority’s team set up to find a presidential candidate when asked about the chances that the former leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, has of being the Socialist nominee.

Gjiknuri refused to mention specific names, but took as an example former president Alfred Moisiu, a personality without political ambitions that was able to preserve the balance of power.

“It might be someone who has given a contribution to the Socialist Party. No one is excluded, even the name you mentioned [Fatos Nano]”, he said.

“It is necessary to have someone without a political agenda, not to meddle politics with the office of the president, as President Meta did in the past 5 years. We need someone without further political ambitions, and history has proved that, as in the case of ex-president Moisiu, a person that was not involved and had no ambitions in politics”, concluded Gjiknuri.

He also invited the Democratic Party to put forward their presidential nominee but emphasized that Sali Berisha must remain out of the process.

Fatos Nano served as Prime Minister of Albania in 1991, from 1997 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2005.

After losing the parliamentary polls to the Democratic Party in 2005, Nano took a step back from politics and has not been actively involved since then.

He was also the first leader and founder of the Albanian Socialist Party.
