In a few days, the State Police is set to launch a nationwide operation to tackle energy theft.
The Interior and Energy ministers summoned a meeting with top police authorities to instruct the latter on keeping this phenomenon at the top of their priority list.
The request comes only shortly after PM Edi Rama declared a state of emergency on energy.
Sources confirmed for Euronew Albania that large enterprises will be the first to go under the lenses of the law enforcement authorities.
According to a report from the Energy Regulatory Entity, in 2020 energy losses totaled 1.4 million megawatts, of which 60% were a result of electricity theft.
If that amount were to be sold as per last year’s average price at the Hungarian stock market, it would cost €32.3 million.
In 2014, energy theft was one of the main priorities of the current government with hundreds of citizens caught stealing electricity sentenced to prison.
