The Special Prosecutor’s Office of Kosovo has filed an indictment against M.M in the case related to the murder of the Serb politician from Kosovo, Oliver Ivanović.
M.M, a member of the Serbian community, was arrested by the Kosovo Police on October 19, 2022, under suspicion of being a member “of an organized criminal group” linked to Ivanović’s murder.
As announced by the Special Prosecutor’s Office, the indictment against M.M has been filed based on the suspicion that he committed criminal acts: “Participation or organization of an organized criminal group”, “Obstruction of proving or official procedures”, “Threats”, and “Forgery of documents”.
“The case is related to the murder of the late Oliver Ivanović, where the accused, as part of the group, took actions after the occurrence of the murder, obstructing the criminal procedure. After the investigation, he used forged documents and threatened official persons who conducted criminal proceedings against him,” said the Prosecutor’s Office in its statement.
Ivanović was killed on January 16, 2018, with six shots in the back, in front of his party’s building in North Mitrovica. More than five years after the murder, the case remains unresolved.
For Ivanović’s case, the Special Prosecutor’s Office of Kosovo has also filed three other indictments.
The indictments mention individuals who, as stated, “knowingly and intentionally assisted the criminal group in committing the criminal act of Oliver Ivanović’s murder”. The perpetrator of the murder or the mastermind behind it is not known.
Indictments were raised against the police officers Nedeljko Spasojević, Radeta Basara, Zharko Jovanović, as well as against Oliver Ivanović’s secretary, Silvana Arsović, and Marko Rošić, a resident of North Mitrovica.
Investigations into Ivanović’s murder are also conducted by the Special Prosecutor’s Office of Serbia, but the case in Serbia is still in the preliminary investigation phase.
The Ministries of Justice of Kosovo and Serbia do not cooperate, while procedures in Kosovo require the mediation of the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) for obtaining witness statements.
