The number of nurses fleeing Albania in 2021 was almost equal to the number of licenses issued to practice this profession.

The pandemic seems to have toned down the phenomenon, but only to be tripled in the past year.

Matilda Gremi completed her nurse degree in Albania, but in 2019 she decided to leave for Germany.

“The working conditions I saw while doing my internship made me choose this path. Starting from the most basic things, such as lack of gloves and medication”, says Matilda.

Today she works as a nurse in the Emergency Room at a German hospital.

“The first moment was very different, it had nothing to do with the conditions I saw in Albania. I have a work contract for 38.5 hours a week, so I get the weekend off”, she added.

Germany is the most coveted country for practicing young nurses. The job has an average salary starting from €2,900 a month meanwhile, the average gross salary in Albania is €540.

Currently, Albania has around 24,000 licensed nurses, of which only 17,000 are employed.

Hospitals have some 262 vacant positions, a figure reportedly higher than in the previous year.
