EU’s commissioner for the Enlargement process, Oliver Varhelyi declared today that he was in favor of the Open Balkan. According to him, countries in the region should encourage this initiative so that regional cooperation and the economy can grow.
According to Varhelyi, every form of regional cooperation is in the best interest not only of countries in the Balkans but those in the EU also.
The Commission also added that a similar initiative was once called the ‘mini-Schengen’ and then the Berlin Process, which created a common regional market – an initiative, which sometime later was put aside.
In addition, Varhelyi underlined that it would be ideal if all countries of the Western Balkans would return to the common regional market. Meanwhile, he invited all countries to return to regional cooperation.
Lastly, he mentioned the fact that he is originally from Hungary, which is why he finds it much easier to understand the needs of the Balkans.
