On Wednesday at 16:00, university lecturers will begin their strike.
This Monday they started a protest at 11:00 in front of the Polytechnic University of Tirana. Since the government did not give any signs of a possible negotiation for their demands, they have now announced the date of the hunger strike.
Lecturers’ demands:
– Salary increase for lecturers and support staff
– Increasing funding for scientific research
-Restoration of salary supplementation
-Increasing the salary allowance for seniority
-Increasing the payment of additional workload hours
-Revaluation of the teaching hour
-Revision of the tax of 23% on the payment of the additional load
– To suspend until 2026 the implementation of point c) of paragraph 3, of Chapter III of VKM No. 112, dated 23.2.2018, for the criteria for receiving the title “Professor”
– Transparency on the budget and income of public universities
Lecturer at the University of Arts, Harri Aleksi, told Euronews Albania that there has been mounting pressure from the government to halt participating in the protest.
“We feel a great abandonment by our superiors, by our leaders,” said Aleksi.
In addition, he also said that their demands are fair and they should be paid as professionals. According to him, every lost hour will be replaced, but the students must also understand the issue.
For 3 weeks now, lecturers have boycotted classes and asked the government to meet their demands.
Prime Minister Rama did not support their protest and declared that there will be no salary increase.
