Around 30% of Albanian families have been asked for bribes from public administration workers, sometime in the past 12 months.

More than 1 in 4 families (27.7%) have given bribes during this same time frame.

In total, almost all of those that had been asked for a bribe, had completed the transaction under the table (95.1%).

Barometer findings in collaboration with MRB and Centrum Data

These findings were extracted from a study conducted by Euronews Albania, MRB and Data Centrum, on a national scale over the timespan October 20 – 29 2021.

The study was concentrated on the citizens’ involvement in informal payments in exchange for receiving services in the public healthcare system, education, police, justice, private property etc.

Our observations discovered that despite the fact that citizens are on a regular basis, faced with requests for bribes by public workers and civil servants, almost none of them actually end up filing a police report or denouncing these cases that fall under administrative corruption.

This was largely confirmed by the data made available by justice bodies like the General Prosecution, which reported that in 2020, they received an insignificant number of denouncements regarding bribery. During all of 2020, only 25 cases involving bribes had been investigated by this institution, only 3 of which ended up being forwarded to the court system for further judgment.
