Over 55,000 migrants tried to cross into the EU in 2021 via the Western Balkan route, mainly Syrians, Moroccans, and Afghans.
EU’s Border Agency Frontex pointed to a 138% increase compared to the same period last year, and up by 387% in comparison to 2019.
A total of 184,180 migrants reached the EU’s external borders in 2021, 60% more than in 2020.
Of these, 8,000 tried to cross through the Eastern frontier this year, almost thirteen times more than last year.
In addition, there were 64,400 illegal border crossings recorded in the Central Mediterranean route, predominantly from Tunisia, Egypt, and Bangladesh.
Frontex data revealed that between January to November, 18,764 migrants tried to cross through the Eastern Mediterranean route, marking a 75% drop from 2019.
