Epidemiologist Ilir Alimehmeti said on tonight’s Now with Erla Mehilli that applying the green pass certificate, like many other countries in the world, can serve as an incentive to push the vaccination drive, but it may not solve the problem.

According to him, Albania cannot be compared to other European countries that are already enforcing it, as they also have a set of measures that are not being respected in Albania.

“The Green Pass is not a guarantee that you won’t contract the virus, but a push to immunize more people. It does help, some people will actually get the vaccine for this reason, nevertheless, it doesn’t solve the overall problem”, said Dr. Alimehmeti.

In regards to the most recent wave of infections, and soaring COVID deaths, the Chief Medical Officer of the Emergency Room Dr. Skender Brataj pointed that it was triggered by the football match attended by over 20,000 fans.

Dr. Brataj and Dr. Alimehmeti suggested that events with such a high number of people pose the risk of massively spreading the virus.

“Legally, it is not permitted, only 30% of the stadium’s capacity is allowed”, said Dr. Brataj.

“Large gatherings are classical super spreaders. Then you see that in two weeks after we have a major rise in figures. You do the calculation yourself and you’ll see that it’s precisely two weeks after the match”.
