Prime Minister Edi Rama has spoken about the recent wave of tensions between Kosovo and Serbia after the former decided to implement the principle of reciprocity for license plates.

In a Twitter post, the head of the Albanian executive branch justified Kosovo’s claims as “fair”, but on the other hand appealed to both countries to engage in a dialogue over the dispute, and called on the EU to broker the talks.

“Kosovo is in its utmost right in raising this problem. Now, for the problem to be solved, and to guarantee the reciprocity of license plates, a frozen conflict boomerang must be avoided (as it happened with the 100% tariff). Kosovo must engage in a dialogue, Serbia needs to cooperate, and the EU has to mediate it”, wrote Rama on Twitter.

On Monday, the government of Kosovo passed a law requiring all vehicles with Serbian license plates to replace them with Kosovar ones prior to crossing the border.
