The postponement of discussions regarding the accession of North Macedonia into the European Union has led to a drop in citizens’ trust in the EU.

In a recent study conducted by the Regional Partnership Council, the support regarding North Macedonia’s EU membership has suffered a significant drop from 70% to 53%.

On a Western Balkans scale, 63% of respondents support accession into the EU, whereas 8% are against it. Those holding a neutral stance made up 27%.

The poll carried out in Macedonia found that 21% of citizens believe that their country will be a member of the EU by 2025, 31% said by 2030 whereas 31% believe their country will never enter the EU.

In April 2018, North Macedonia was granted the recommendation for the opening of accession talks, but was blocked in the process due to Albania not meeting its own conditions.

Lastly, Bulgaria blocked North Macedonia’s membership negotiation on grounds of historical and national identity disputes, which in turn also blocked Albania’s route to the EU.
