President Ilir Meta reacted after the recent statements made by the Greek minister of foreign affairs Nikos Dendias, made a few days ago in Tirana, in regards to the maritime border dispute between both countries.
During a press conference from the Presidency, Meta said that in 2018, he has authorized the Albanian negotiation team to represent the country and negotiate with the Greek side on reaching an agreement.
According to Meta, there haven’t been any requests for authorization present by PM Edi Rama in regards to this issue, while adding that Parliament should take a stance on this important matter.
Dendias visited Tirana a few days ago and during a joint press conference with his Albanian homolog, Olta Xhacka, he said that the ‘sea dispute’ hasn’t been sent to The Hague because Meta hasn’t given his authorization.
The Greek foreign minister also underlined that this issue will be resolved with the election of the new Albanian president in a few months.
Around 2 years ago, Albania and Greece decided to head to an International Court of Justice in order to resolve a dispute regarding the maritime border between both countries, on the basis of international expertise and international maritime rights.
