President Ilir Meta vowed on Saturday to accept every decision that will be taken by the parliament referring to the vote that will take place for the election of his successor.
The statement was released by the spokesperson of the Presidential office after the Socialist Party nominated its official candidate, Bajram Begaj.
“The President of the Republic Ilir Meta is following the procedures for the election of Bajram Begaj as the new President of the Republic and will respect every decision of the Assembly expressed by the vote”, the statement read.
His reaction comes after a constitutional debate that prohibits active military staff from being elected to high-ranking posts.
Shortly after, General Commander Bajram Begaj announced that he has submitted his resignation to the Minister of Defense Niko Peleshi, as well as Prime Minister Edi Rama.
