The Ambassador of the European Union in Tirana, Christiane Hohmann stated that according to the progress report of the EC for Albania, the freedom of press and the intimidation and smearing of journalists remain a serious concern.
In a joint press conference with Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, Hohmann stated that the independence of the media continues to be hindered by the interests of big business and politics.
“The report stated that media independence and the quality of journalism continue to be hampered by an intertwining of business and political interests, and that misinformation is a re-emerging concern. The report expresses deep regret that the atmosphere of verbal attacks, smear campaigns and acts of intimidation of journalists has not improved; and we will continue to follow this matter closely.
The report also calls for stronger efforts to consolidate property rights through the registration and digitization of cadastral data”, added Ambassador Hohmann.
