Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated on Saturday Bajram Begaj on being elected the new head of the Albanian state.
The Russian Embassy in Tirana shared Putin’s message on Facebook.
Bajram Begaj was appointed after a majority vote in parliament on June 4.
He was nominated by the Socialist Party and voted by 78 MPs, 4 were against and 1 abstained.
The President-elect must now wait until July 24 to officially take over the presidency.
After Alfred Moisiu, Bajram Begaj is the second military official to be appointed president.
