Campaigns to apply ‘quick fixes’ to the taxation system happen often, and they only create further trouble for both businesses and the self-employed.

This is what economy expert Majlind Lazimi stated during Euronews Albania’s ‘NOW’ with Erla Mehilli, following the government’s decision to pass a new law that will tax small businesses differently.

In addition, he said that Albanians pay the highest taxes in the region.

Lazimi suggested that the government should simplify the tax system and lower the fiscal burden on citizens.

“The majority of freelancing professionals who make a good salary have avoided the current taxing system. One of the reasons to make the formalization of our economy easier is to lower the fiscal burden,” – he said.

The Albanian government set up an Anti-Informality Unit to check on various irregular practices that may be taking place in the job market.

This decision came after the recent massive data leak which included the salaries of more than 630 thousand citizens.
