Prime Minister Edi Rama ruled out on Thursday any potential secret deal on Butrint National Park.

During his word from the parliament’s podium, Rama said the government is cooperating with an Albanian-American foundation to yield profitable activities at the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Rama said that the government has been working for a long time with the foundation and considered it a ‘trustworthy collaborator’.

“You’re not accusing the Ministry of Culture, but the Albanian-American foundation of allegedly signing a secret deal to have bars and restaurants in Butrint. This is a new agreement to go beyond that. Butrint will have many profitable activities”, Rama said.

Minister of Culture Elva Margariti also affirmed the prime minister’s statement, adding that the agreement will be entirely “transparent” and “in favor of the country”.

“As the culture minister I want to assure you: stay calm, we’re not giving Butrint up for a concession”, said Margariti.

PM Rama also emphasized that the revenue will be collected by Butrint National Park, adding that the procedure is similar to what other governments have done in the past.
