Prime Minister Edi Rama gave an ultimatum that none of the local budgets will get the green light if they don’t include cleaning costs.
Edi Rama gathered all mayors at the Prime Minister’s Office informing them also that from now on tourism minister Mirela Kumbaro will attend all town hall council meetings.
“The government will intervene directly. None of the local budgets will be approved in case they do not include cleaning costs”, declared Rama.
The head of the government clarified that from a financial perspective none of the municipalities have problems with daily waste management.
“If the entire budget were to go to cleaning, so be it. There is nothing else more important than that”, he added.
Rama also warned mayors that failure to fulfill these responsibilities will lead to prosecution.
“The law clearly stipulates that mayors have the responsibility, while municipalities can be financially sanctioned by law for these misdemeanors. Sanctions can include taking under administration the town hall and also taking the mayor to the Prosecutor’s Office. That would be the end of our common path, in case we don’t have the right partners”, said Rama.
