PM Edi Rama warned mayors across the country that if municipalities don’t change the serious financial situation they currently find themselves in, they will be put under the general government’s administration.
In a meeting with mayors today, the head of government underlined that he is looking for discipline.
“One thing that the minister failed to mention, as she probably wanted to let me say it because bad news is always left up to me – is that we will be taking the necessary measures if the obligations mentioned in the report regarding financial discipline isn’t met. We’ll take the municipalities under our administration. This is a common practice around the world. We aren’t asking for something that can’t be done or which required an unbearable amount of suffering. We are asking for discipline. Municipalities should organize their profitable economic and financial activities. This is absolutely possible. It only requires discipline and vision,” – said Rama.
In addition, Rama criticized mayors because according to him, they aren’t doing enough in terms of profit-generating activities.
“Municipalities have all it takes to build their budgets and make money for their budget. Tell me of a single municipal company that builds shelters in Albania? There is none! The government can’t be the answer to every need and request,” – said Rama.
