The head of Diplomacy at the European Union, Josep Borrell, has called on Prishtina and Belgrade to refrain from any unilateral action that could further increase tensions.

He made these statements after the decision of the Serbian List, the largest party of Serbs in Kosovo, to withdraw from all state institutions in Kosovo.

The warnings of the Serbian List to leave the institutions of Kosovo have come after the decision of the Kosovo authorities to suspend the director of the Kosovo Police for the northern region, Nenad Gjuric, who has refused to implement the decision of the Government of Kosovo on the re-registration of cars that have license plates issued by Serbia in RKS – the Republic of Kosovo.

Borell has said that the removal of Serbs from Kosovo’s institutions is not a solution to the current disagreements.

“The recent developments endanger the great work that has been done in the framework of the dialogue between Belgrade and Prishtina”, he said.

Goran Rakic, the chairman of the Serbian List, said on November 5 that the decision to leave the institutions will be implemented up until the Government of Kosovo withdraws its decision on the re-registration of cars while also respecting the Brussels agreements.

The EU statement also mentioned the request to Kosovo authorities to postpone the deadline for the re-registration of cars and to suspend punitive measures against the owners of cars holding Serbian license plates.

“The license plate issue can be resolved by the parties within the framework of the dialogue”, the statement said.
