On January 8, after numerous calls for party reelections, a referendum, and 2 rivaling Congresses, a group led by former PM and party leader Sali Berisha used hammers and other heavy objects to break open the main doors of DP’s headquarters, which had been heavily armored by the current party chair, Lulzim Basha.
Following these attempts by Berisha’s supporters, unidentified individuals – possibly employees – from inside the Democratic Party, fired tear gas and threw broken glass and other heavy objects at the protestors in an attempt to prevent them from breaking in, before the police intervened at the party’s request.
One day after the protest that took place in and around the premises of the Democratic Party’s main headquarters in Tirana, the State Police have announced that they’ve arrested a total of 34 citizens and pressed charges against 18 others.
Amongst those who were prosecuted were DP’s Secretary General, Gazmend Bardhi and Democratic MP and member of Provisional Refoundation Group, Flamur Noka.
Bardhi is facing criminal charges for ‘Violating the rules prescribed for the use of explosives and radioactive substances’, and “Training for the production and use of illegal weapons and other dangerous substances”.
