Doubts about the Russian financing of the Democratic Party were part of the back-and-forth discussions today in parliament between the ruling majority and the opposition.
It was the Minister of State for Relations with the Parliament, Elisa Spiropali who considered the audit that was recently set up by Sali Berisha to investigate the matter, ‘a ridiculous farse’.
“Where is Luli today, where is Luli? Where is your audit? Today, you raised this audit just to have a laugh; to find the rubles in Luli’s pockets and in other pockets, those of Luli’s associates. This is ridiculous, this does not suit you – a man who claims to be a statesman that was once in power and will do so again”, she said.
In the same line, Socialist MP Pandeli Majko, also argued that through a single party’s wrongdoing, Albania’s national security has been compromised.
“Before dealing with the patrons of the Socialist Party, it would be a good idea to first deal with the patrons of St. Petersburg. This is a topic that cannot be passed over in Parliament as a second-hand issue, a simple irregularity or a handicap of a former chairman of the Democratic Party”, said Majko.
The chairman of the Democratic Party responded to the accusations by saying that Prime Minister Rama was the one who closed the investigation against Lulzim Basha several years ago.
“Absolutely, DP has never received a penny and can never receive a penny from a country that has positioned itself as an enemy of the Albanian national cause. As a result, a commission has been set up which will be investigating everything”, argued the head of Democrats.
A few weeks ago, British media published the news that Russia had funded the Democratic Party in 2017, by transferring a grand total of about 500 thousand euros.
