Former Minister of the Interior Saimir Tahiri has asked the Court of Elbasan to recognize the time during which he has served part of the sentence issued on September 19, 2019.
He is referring to the first sentence, where the former minister was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months of probation. Tahiri claims to have served most of this sentence.
Today’s session was postponed due to the absence of his lawyer, Maks Haxhia.
If the Court of Elbasan accepts this request, his sentence will be reduced by at least 1 and a half years, from the 3.4 years which he was sentenced to.
On February 4, the Special Court of Appeals for Corruption and Organized Crime upheld the decision made by the first-instance court, by revising Tahiri’s sentence to 5-years in prison.
When factoring in for summary conviction, Tahiri will now be serving a sentence of 3 years and 4 months in prison.
Tahiri was appointed Minister of the Interior in 2013, at the age of 34. In March 2017, Tahiri resigned after the publication of several wiretaps in Italy where his name was mentioned by Moisi Habila in relation to an illegal operation.
