Former minister of interior Saimir Tahiri, has just reacted to the verdict of the Special Appeals Court, which sentenced him to 3.4 years in prison, calling it a ‘great injustice’.

Tahiri also stated that he never broke the law while in office as minister of internal affairs from 2013-2017.

‘I love you all! It sucks that it had to be like this! On the moral plane, I’m calm. I have never broken the law and I loved each and every day of my work as a minister. I am happy that I accomplished my duties to the best of my abilities. This is nothing but an injustice,” – said Tahiri, in a Facebook post.

The Special Appeals Court against Corruption and Organized Crime found Tahiri guilty on several counts of abuse of power, thus upholding the previous verdict that had sentenced Tahiri to 5 years in prison.

The First Instance Court had converted Tahiri’s sentence to 3 years and 4 months’ probation services.

Later, the Special Appeals Court reversed this verdict and returned the case for retrial at a lower court.

Based on procedures, Tahiri will have to start serving his time immediately.

The court’s decision is final but Tahiri does have the right to send the case for recourse at Tirana’s High Court, within 45 days.
