The hearing in former internal minister, Saimir Tahiri’s trial, which was expected to take place today at Tirana’s District Court has been postponed.

The reason behind his delay was the absence of SPAK’s prosecutors, Vladimir Mara and Dritan Prenci, who have recently contracted COVID-19.

According to sources from SPAK, several other prosecutors from the same institution have contracted the coronavirus, thus resulting in the postponement of numerous other court hearings.

On September 2019, the Criminal Court convicted the former minister on charges of ‘abuse of power’, thus sentencing him to 5 years behind bars – a sentence which was soon after suspended and converted to 3 years of probation services.

The ex-minister was also accused of ‘narcotics’ trafficking’ in collaboration with a highly structures criminal group, but these charges were dropped.

The Special Appeals Tribunal against Corruption and Organized Crime has requested to have Tahiri fully indicted of all charges, whereas the Prosecution still claims that his drug trafficking sentence should be upheld.
