Around 1.4 million Albanians result to have been employed in 2020, according to data from the country’s statistics institute (INSTAT).

The salaries of around 700,000 were served to the public in an illegitimate way.

According to sociologist Gezim Tushi, this revelation is a “social bomb”.

“An unbalanced wage system causes social discontent and is something that needs to be fixed. It’s social tension”, he says.

By the end of 2020, Albania counted over 116,000 active enterprises.

After the salaries were leaked, many workers started submitting their resignations, in part because of growing discontent and also due to internal competition.

According to economy expert Arben Malaj, the figures that we saw indicate “a rise in informality”.

“The real wage is not portrayed, instead they show the minimum wage and the rest is on a payroll”, says Malaj.

As of September, the average wage as per INSTAT was €466. The average wage in a state job was €557, and €424 in the private sector, while the minimum wage is around €250.

“The debate on why is someone getting paid more than you is as dangerous as social inequality”, says sociologist Tushi.

The data leaked to the public points to another issue that company owners need to start considering.

“If people today put a camera to surveil the physical entrance, what is to be done with the “doors” of WhatsApp, Facebook, or the internet where we share everything”, asked Malaj.
