“This is good news for the consolidation of the justice reform,” – said the EU ambassador Luigi Soreca, when asked about former interior minister Saimir Tahiri’s recent sentencing.

“You know it my habit not to comment on ongoing proceedings, or on specific cases, but what I can say is that looking at some of the latest decisions of the courts and prosecutions we see stronger independence of the judicial. As I said, we see a good signal of progress by both prosecutors and courts. Is this enough? No, we expect more to come from SPAK and from every member and institution of the justice reform that is in place,” – said Soreca during a press statement in Korca.

The ambassador continued by saying that he finds the extension of the Vetting term crucial for the implementation of the justice reform, even though the Democratic Party (DP) has come out against it.

“You know what our stance has been as we’ve been very clear on this. We’ve said that the implementation of the justice reform is crucial for the country’s development. This has been confirmed by the Venice Commission last December has not identified any problems in the extension of the vetting term for another 2 years. It’s important to assure the same standard of vetting for all judges. So, a vote on the extension of the vetting on the constitutional members is a vote for the future of Albania in the EU,” – added Soreca.

In addition, when asked about Sali Berisha’s refusal to withdraw from politics and his non-grata designation, Soreca said that he would rather not comment on the internal developments of a political party.

“Allow me not to comment on internal developments in a party we have applied so far a principle of non-interference and we are approaching a very important by-election. At the same time, we talk to all political forces and when it comes to EU matters that are important for the future of Albania including the vetting extension,” – concluded the EU ambassador.
