“SPAK to vet politicians”, Basha calls for top-down background checks

The leader of the Democratic Party declared that it is SPAK that must conduct the vetting process of politicians, in order to segregate politics from organized crime.

In a press conference, Lulzim Basha emphasized that SPAK should begin by investigating the country’s top 200 politicians, MPs, mayors, prime minister, and speaker of the assembly, and conduct a thorough check on their potential links to top notorious organized crime groups.

In addition, top officials should also be subject to thorough checks of their assets, including that of their close family or other individuals that might be administering their illicit wealth.

“It is imperative for Albania to undertake a step to clean up politics from the influence of organized crime which has reached to their very own presence in the political scene”, he emphasized”, Basha claimed.

On Monday, the Democratic Party announced its initiative have a vetting process on politicians, similar to the one in the justice system which has led to the dismissal and resignation of hundred of judges.
