The government’s recent initiative to ban all use of plastic bags is only a clever way for them to cover for the complete mismanagement of waste.
These were the remarks made by ecologist, Taulant Bino, during Euronews Albania’s ‘Good Morning’ show, adding that in any case, these initiatives don’t get implemented in compliance with practices of the European Union, rendering them dysfunctional.
According to the ecologist, a better option to reduce the use of plastic bags would be bringing up the price, as is the case in EU member states.
“The biggest issue with waste is their mismanagement and when we look at the current state of things, nothing has changed since 2013, when the government came out with a program vowing to clean up Albania and eliminate its garbage,” – said Bino.
In addition, Bino emphasized that municipalities are more involved in cleaning up much more than in the integrated management of waste, which would include all initiatives for waste reduction that never get implemented.
“They haven’t enforced any of the initiatives on recycling waste. Normally, there should have been more recycling, but we go directly from cleanup to extermination, which should be the last phase of waste management,” – declared the ecologist.
