“The state must take all necessary means in case the price of the basket of goods rises”, say unanimously experts from Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia on Good Morning.
Klodian Muço, an economy expert based in Albania, said that the government “can” and “should” halt a rise in prices.
“The state has to intervene in times of crisis. Albania is considered the first country in the Western Balkans where 7% of the population is in a hunger crisis. Under these circumstances, the state must do something”, he said.
Bardh Ahmeti, another specialist in the field who works in Kosovo, spoke along the same lines and underlined that the same is happening in his country too.
“We’ve been struck by inflation and we are suffering the price crisis. We are highly dependent on imports. The state needs to intervene when the price of the market basket has been severely impacted”, said Ahmeti.
Meanwhile, economist Harun Tahiri from North Macedonia said that the government’s decision to freeze the price of the basket of goods was “good” but “late”. Alike his colleague, he also recommended that the state needs to get more involved in times of crisis.
The government in North Macedonia froze the price of the basket of goods, with prices to remain fixed as they were on December 1. The act will stay in force until 31 January 2022 and then will be subject to revision.
