Summer Day will be celebrated in all of Albania today, marking an ancient tradition of celebrating the coming of spring.

‘Summer Day’ is a pagan tradition that is usually celebrated in the Elbasan region in central Albania, but it spreads across the entire country as well.

The origin of these festivities goes back to the Temple of the Mountain Fairy located close to the Shkumbin River in Elbasan.

Festivities began since last night. They include lighting up big bonfires that symbolize the last fire that shuns away the cold winter nights and welcomes the return of spring and hope for human civilizations.

Elbasan is a city that has traditionally celebrated this day.

This will be the first year since the pandemic when citizens will be able to celebrate without being confined to a police curfew or other anti-COVID restrictions.

Colorful flowers, music and a sweet pastry known as ballakume are amongst the traditions that will mark this day.
