Ilir Meta has reacted from his prison cell via an audio recording following the Supreme Court’s decision to reject his appeal, keeping him in custody.
Meta described the ruling as a positive step toward overcoming what he called a “fictional obstacle” on his path to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, where he claims he will emerge victorious.
“Today, we took a positive step in the Meta case. We passed another fictional obstacle—the Supreme Court, which does not really exist—so we can move faster towards the Strasbourg Court, where we will win, just as we won in Venice against Rama’s so-called reform. And don’t forget, March 2nd is coming, marking the 5th anniversary of the grand rally that publicly dismantled the anti-constitutional laws of Rama’s so-called reform. I call on all PL supporters and our fellow Albanians abroad to register and vote on May 11th, so this narco-regime is thrown into the Lana River,” Meta was heard saying in his message.
Meta’s Charges and Ongoing Detention
Meta has been held in Jordan Misja detention center since October 2024.
The Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) has charged him with corruption, money laundering, and asset concealment in relation to:
- The CEZ-DIA case,
- Alleged illegal lobbying by the former Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) in the U.S.,
- Unexplained family expenses.
His legal team has vowed to continue fighting the case at the European Court of Human Rights.
