Arba Kokalari, a member of the European Parliament for Sweden of Albanian descent, said Sweden and Finland started considering applying for NATO accession after threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He [Putin] has verbally threatened and sent military air jets across the Swedish border. He’s been really aggressive”, said the Swedish politician for Euronews Albania.
Kokalari said the way Russia is treating its neighbors serves to emphasize how important it is to have a strong NATO.
Before the war in Ukraine, she said, the general public in Sweden was divided when it comes to joining NATO.
“After the war the opinion was pro-NATO and most political parties endorse accession. In fact, 6 out 8 parties in Sweden are in favor of joining the Alliance”, she said.
The MEP said she is confident that both Sweden and Finland will join NATO, as it will make the North Atlantic Alliance stronger.
But on the other hand, Kokalari fears that the process might take a long time.
