The High Court has accepted the request made by the former minister of interior, Saimir Tahiri to return his case to the Special Court of Appeals, where he will appear before a different panel of judges.
Tahiri’s defense attorney argued against the procedural violations that were identified by the High Court, while emphasizing that his client’s innocence will continue to be asserted at the Special Appeals Court.
SPAK’s stance on this case is also highly-anticipated as they are known to have requested a 12-year prison sentence for Tahiri, despite the fact that the First Instance Court dismissed the case, granting the former-minister an acquittal.
Saimir Tahiri has been accused of drug trafficking and being an accessory to a crime in collaboration with the ‘Habilaj’ clan.
In the first instance court, Tahiri was charged with a 3-year probation sentence on charges of abuse of power, prompting the Special Court of Appeals to overturn this verdict and release an order to retry Tahiri and bring him before a different judicial body.
Tahiri in turn, appealed this verdict taking the case before the High Court, which will decide on the continuity of one of the most infamous cases concerning Albanian public officials in recent years.
