Police reported that the crash happened around 3:00 a.m. in the Bassenheim area of the Mayen-Koblenz district, in the direction of Trier.
The minibus, carrying nine passengers returning from a family celebration in Hesse, veered off the road and overturned several times for reasons that remain unclear.
Authorities confirmed that the 22-year-old driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and investigations are still ongoing.
Among the victims are a 53-year-old man and two women, aged 47 and 65. The six other passengers, aged between 20 and 66, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Albania’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the victims were Albanian nationals.
No other vehicles were directly involved in the crash, although another car had to pull back after being hit by debris scattered on the road.
The highway was closed for over four hours and reopened in the morning.
Dozens of emergency service vehicles, police units, and firefighters were present at the scene to manage the situation and recover the overturned minibus.
