According to the President of the Confederate of Syndicates, Kol Nikollaj, the government is responsible for the current issues facing miners in Albania.
Nikollaj argued, during his interview on Euronews Albania, that the lack of inspections and the pirated activities of illegal mines are influencing the livelihood of workers in his city, Bulqize.
In addition, Nikollaj raised the alarm about the current working conditions in Zone D, that is part of the mines of Bulqiza, where Muharrem Plaku recently lost his life, saying that in this area, there’s a total of 30 private companies that are all scattered in this area, where they force miners to work under horrible conditions and chaos.
“You can tell just by looking at the pictures, it’s a rat hole. It doesn’t look like a mine to me, it’s shameful and an insult to all of us and our intelligence. They can’t be called mines and we have continually raised the issue, calling for these mines to stop been issued a license,” – said Nikollaj.
The president of the Confederate of Syndicates continued by saying that despite the fact that some companies have been suspended their licenses, they are still working.
“The main liability lies with the government; the government should be responsible for its citizens, the enforcement of laws and the creation of spaces for groups of interest, including unions,” – said Nikollaj.
“The jurisdiction of these structures should be taken away from the government; they should be independent law-enforcement agencies. As long as they continue like this, we’ll have the same situation on our hands,” – said Nikollaj.
