This week’s Euronews Albania’s docuseries “Unpublished” focused on the cultivation of indoor cannabis, usually done in houses or old warehouses, while this practice comes as one of the latest methods in growing the plant in Albania.

Unpublished revealed details from a drug-bust operation from Laçi, where growers were using powerful electric lamps that provide the heat needed to grow the marijuana planted in large pots.

“The author had cultivated the narcotics in a warehouse in front of his home. He had adjusted the place to cultivate the plant in pots and created a lighting and heating system through powerful lamps, as well as a ventilation system.”.

“The raid finalized with catching the author in the act and seizing all the material used by the perpetrator the cultivate the narcotics”, said Zef Laska, the chief of the Lezha Local Police Directorate for Unpublished on Euronews Albania.

Growing indoor cannabis is one of the newest methods being used in Albania, an experience cultivated by Albanians that had previously lived abroad in countries such as the UK or the Netherlands and then brought back to their home country. Indoor cultivation is common in these states as the plant requires a warm environment and plenty of sun in order to grow.

“Indoor cultivation of cannabis is a phenomenon imported by those states that do not have a lot of sun and for this reason, it is impossible to grow the plant outdoors. There might be other persons too but I’m not the competent person to speak about England or Belgium”, said Rezar Velmishi, chief of the narcotics department the General Police Directorate.

But creating the right environment for the cultivation of cannabis bears high financial costs, asserted Laska.

“I cannot declare the exact amount of the financial costs, but it is a considerable sum. The growers have found the support of special individuals that are interested in buying and trafficking it in other countries”, said Laska.

The police have made a lot of efforts to stop the cultivation of cannabis in Albania but it is not turning into a method employed by organized crime groups.
