A heated debate arose during mayor Erion Veliaj’s testimony before the Inquiry Commission on the incinerator scandal.

The Commission’s chair Jorida Tabaku clashed with Veliaj because the latter was accused of going off on a tangent and refusing to respond to the questions being asked on what went on behind the scenes during the construction of the incinerators.

More specifically, Tabaku accused Veliaj of refusing to respond to her question about the decision made by the City’s Municipal Council to build the incinerator of Tirana.

Veliaj on the other hand, retaliated by saying that Tabaku has been convicted of defamation against him and that she was not letting him speak.

Snippet from today’s debate:

Tabaku: You are intentionally mixing up the facts.

Valiaj: You can ask the questions, but you can’t answer them for me. What you’re doing is dishonest and the way you’re leading this commission is dishonest. If you want to talk about our clashes, I’ve already beaten you in court and you’ve been convicted of defamation against me.

Tabaku: Can you please read us the decision of the Municipal Council.

Veliaj: Unlike you, I’ve come prepared. Let me finish. I’ve only spoken in the name of the municipality; this is a decision of the Municipal Council.

Tabaku: Why do you fear a decision made by the municipal council then?

Tabaku: If you deviate from the real subject of the question, I won’t let you answer.

Veliaj: If you’ve called me here, you’ll have to listen to me. We’ve exposed a massive lie.

Tabaku: Please answer about Tirana’s Municipality. Read us the decision of the Municipal Council. Today, you are responsible for the Municipality of Tirana.

Veliaj:  Relax, take a break. I can stay here for another 3 days. Drink some water, take a deep breath.

Today, the following state officials are expected to testify before the Inquiry Commission: Secretary-General of the PM’s Office Engjell Agaci, Socialist MP Alqi Ballko, and former energy minister, Damian Gjiknuri.
