Several minutes of rain was all it took for Lana River to overflow its banks this Thursday.
The odor from the sewage and wastewater that gets dumped into the city’s main river has been a major concern for years since the regime change.
These untreated waters get spilled out onto the streets in days of heavy rains becoming an even more problematic issue especially for residents living close to the river but for passers-by as well.
Citizens spoke to Euronews Albania and voiced their concerns:
“Once upon a time, we used to wash our clothes here. This water used to be safe to drink but now it looks like petrol.”
“There’s nothing we can do; we’re used to it. It smells like Albania.” – these were only some of the concerns.
According to environmental experts, the Lana River has turned into a sewage canal.
A 2020 report on the state of the Albanian environment showed that Lana’s water is in extremely poor condition that is well below the required norms.
Amongst the main contributors to this pollution are wastewaters, washing detergent, industrial waters, and solid wastes.
Tirana is the only capital in the entire region that doesn’t have a system in place for the treatment of wastewaters.
