The Permanent Representative of Albania to the United Nations Ferit Hoxha reiterated the country’s support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

In his address at the UN Security Council over the heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Ambassador Hoxha said that Russia’s military intervention is not just another crisis with the West, but a challenge for European and international security.

“These last developments on the Russian-Ukrainian border are a well-known playbook. We have seen it in Georgia in 2008 and in Ukraine repeatedly since 2014, unfortunately at the cost of thousands of lives – civilian and military. Russia has used military violence as a means of achieving its political and geopolitical goals”

“The narratives of spheres of influence in Europe or dictating by threats the geostrategic orientation of other countries are tools of another century, of another time, reminiscences of the cold war”, he continued.

A few days ago, a White House representative said Biden warned the Ukrainian president of a “distinct possibility that the Russians could invade Ukraine in February”.

1 January 2022 marked Albania’s first day in its two-year term as a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council. This is the first time that the country holds an important position, 66 years after joining the international organization.
