After suffering a major defeat in the last elections, Democrats are calling on Lulzim Basha to step down, while a majority believes that the party can only be brought back to its feet with his removal.

On the other hand, regional party leaders remain his biggest allies. In the last two party meetings, not a single one of them actually asked Basha to resign.

But despite several meetings, the two political bodies that matter have yet to convene, respectively the Council and the National Assembly.

Apart from a consensual solution that would see Basha resign, the only party forum that could resolve the deadlock is the National Council.

As stipulated by the statute of the Democratic Party, fifty percent of council members may forward a motion of no confidence against the leader to the National Assembly, which will then have the final say.

The National Assembly may convene upon the request of the party’s leader, or if it’s called by one-fourth of its members.
