Prime Minister Zoran Zaev is expected on Friday to officially resign as the chairman of the Social Democratic Union (SDSM), after its defeat in the latest local polls.
The move would open the way for holding a race for the new party’s leader, who will potentially become the new prime minister as the party still holds a parliamentary majority.
Meanwhile, the attention has shifted toward the ethnic Albanian opposition party, the Alternative, which has to decide whether it will join the current government of PM Zoran Zaev.
Little is known who will be Zaev’s successor, but one of the names who has come up the most is Dimitar Kovacevksi, the current deputy minister of finances.
