Residents of 5 Maji street and Lapraka have moved their protest over from the Parliament, to the US embassy and ultimately the EU embassy in Tirana.
They are protesting over the state-ordered demolition of their homes and businesses at 5 Maji street. Citizens are calling on the state to resolve their current situation including their compensation and relocation.
‘We aren’t illegals! We have rights!’ were some of the chants and slogans held during today’s protest.
Residents of the Lapraka neighborhood in Tirana have joined the protest in solidarity with 5 Maji residents, due to concerns that they too risk losing their homes as a result of a new highway project.
For weeks now, a grand demolition project has begun at 5 Maji street in Tirana, which has been advertised as being part of the earthquake reconstruction plan. 400 buildings are expected to be demolished as a result.
