According to the former education minister, Myqerem Tafaj, as much as 90% of public schools in Albania don’t have a central heating system.
Tafaj underlined that this data was found in a report published by the World Health Organization.
“Our schools need to provide students with their basic living needs, like drinking water, good hygiene and heating. Why should schools in Tirana have to shut down if they had a heating system?” – said the former minister.
In regards to the decision of the Education Ministry to close down schools due to temperatures falling below zero, the former minister said that this may have also come as a result of rising numbers of students getting infected with Omicron.
“Albania needs an entirely new strategy for its schools. Municipalities should also feel responsible to do something,” – he said.
