Macedonians are shocked by the tragic bus accident in Bulgaria that claimed at least 45 lives, of which 12 were minors, mainly ethnic Albanians from Skopje.
Dozens gathered Tuesday evening in the capital’s main square to honor the victims and show support to the families who lost their loved ones.
“I am here to express my condolences. I knew more than ten people”, said a citizen.
“This was a great tragedy to the people of Skopje and beyond and we stand beside those who lost a family member in Bulgaria. That’s why we’re here, in sign of solidarity”, said another citizen.
The government declared three days of National Mourning while flags have been lowered to half-mast.
Officials said that the accident occurred around 2 AM, 40 kilometers south of the Bulgaria capital Sofia. 53 passengers, mainly Macedonian nationals, were returning from a three-days in Istanbul. The bus was engulfed in flames shortly after it had crashed.
Seven people were rescued and are being treated for their injuries at a hospital in Sofia.
