The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, said that from June 1 of this year, the use of single-use plastic bags and not multi-use ones has been banned.

In an interview for Euronews Albania, Kumbaro emphasized that three separate checks are being carried out for the use of plastic bags in the country.

She also added, among other things, that they have information that plastic bags are used in open markets, and for this reason they have taken action to stop this from taking place.

“From June 1, single-use plastic bags have been banned, not multi-use plastic bags.

Controls are at three levels, controls at customs to stop the import of these single-use bags, and from June 1 we have not received any entries of these bags in our country. There are also controls being carried out at the production level of these bags, where if the bags were found they have now been seized. And, there are also controls at the points of sale.

It is not something that can be stopped with a single decision. But we have information that in open markets, where vendors who are selling products, aren’t registered with a social security number. The bags that are currently being given out in our supermarket are multi-use ones” – argued Kumbaro.
