The former Minister of Defense Fatmir Mediu in a statement to the press after leaving SPAK where he was asked about the Gerdec incident, said that he does not accept the accusations raised against him.
The former Minister of Defense is being accused of ‘abuse of power’ regarding the Gerdec tragedy.
Mediu stated that he was presented with the 2009 charge, not the acts. He also said that he asked to be investigated in a fair manner while describing the accusation of abuse of power as baseless and politically motivated.
In addition, Mediu emphasized that a minister is in a position of civilian authority and that at the time, the dismantling of weapons was a matter of national security.
“The same charge was presented to me. That of 2009, a politically motivated accusation without any additional evidence to back it up, that of abuse of power. I asked to be summoned about this from the very beginning. I have not been asked about the signed act, it has been 15 years since then. My position is that I am innocent. I do not accept the charge. Everything we did was according to our agreements with the Pentagon regarding the dismantling practices that also involved a thorough analysis from international experts,” said Mediu.
